Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)
About the Course
The Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)
course is intended for participants who are pursuing a career in emergency care
in pre-hospital and/or hospital environments.

The course consists of a minimum of 152 hours of
classroom training which includes lecture and skills instruction. In addition to
classroom the student must also complete a minimum of one 24 hour rotation with
area fire department, two 8 to 12 hour rotations with Rockwall EMS, one 4 hour
rotation in triage, and two 12 hour hospital clinicals which will include a
majority of the time spent in the emergency department and may also include
areas such as; labor and delivery, operating room, intensive care, coronary
care, pediatric and geriatric units.

Classroom lectures are conducted by physicians,
nurses, paramedics and other allied healthcare professionals. Lecture topics
include major emergencies and the appropriate care method to be provided.
Participants will be instructed on how to perform the following state skills;
patient assessment, vital signs, traction splints, spinal immobilization,
mechanical aids to breathing, automated external defibrillation, bandaging,
splinting, medication delivery, and more.

The National Registry exam
minimum passing score is 70%. The national average score for candidates
on the exam is 71.8%*. (As of Jan 2007 the NREMT adopted computer testing with
just a pass/fail status.) |

Calendar Year 2005 (entire country): 63,925 took the EMT-B exam. The pass
rate for first attempt was only 65%. Second attempt pass rate was 39%.

Important questions to ask a school teaching
an EMT course; How many enrolled on day one of
the last class offered. At the end of the class how many remained.
Of those who completed the class how many passed the National Registry exam
and how many attempts were needed. The school should be able to provide this
information upon request. Follow up the information for accuracy by
contacting the Texas Department of State Health Services (EMS) located in
Arlington, Texas and/or the National Registry in Columbus, Ohio.

Requirements:
 |
TxDSHS Certification: Participants
must be at least 18 years of age at time of National Registry testing and have
a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate. Participants who are under 18
years of age may take the course but must be 18 years of age at time of
National Registry testing. |
 |
If you have been convicted of,
placed on deferred adjudication community supervision, or deferred disposition
for any of the following you are not eligible for TxDSDS certification:
murder, capital murder, indecency with a child, aggravated kidnapping,
aggravated sexual assault, aggravated robbery, sexual assault, or substance
abuse offenses involving a child or within a drug free zone.

Minimum Requirements to Pass

Maintain a 78% grade point average or

January 2010. All state applications must have approved fingerprint card
attached to undergo FBI background check. The school will facilitate this
with an approved state provider. The state contracted rate for fingerprinting
